We recruit exceptional candidates committed to establishing a successful practice and maintaining our position at the forefront of the modern Commercial Bar.
Our pupils and tenants are selected from applicants with a broad range of backgrounds and experience, whether recent university graduates or those seeking a second career at the Bar. A number of our barristers have degrees in Law, some have the BCL or other postgraduate qualifications. Others have taken non-Law degrees and proceeded to sit the CPE/GDL.
The Bar is particularly individualistic and requires a high degree of self-discipline and self-motivation, but can be exceptionally rewarding for those who succeed. The ability to work as part of a team of barristers, solicitors and other professionals is also vital.
South Square seeks to recruit at least one tenant each year from our pupils, and it is the policy of Chambers to assist new tenants to establish their careers.
(Please note: the new brochure is currently being updated and will be available soon).
To hear first hand from our barristers about a career at the Bar, life as a pupil at South Square, what we offer, and what we are looking for in perspective applicants, please view our pupillage video below. More detailed case studies can be found at the bottom of the page.
We aim to achieve a balance between training and assessment. Our pupils are welcomed into all areas of Chambers' life and provided with a programme to equip you for practice in a dynamic and challenging environment. You will sit with a number of pupil supervisors for between 6 to 8 weeks, during which time you will have the opportunity to become fully involved in all aspects of their practice.
Our award for pupillages commencing in October 2018 will be £65,000. Drawdowns for living expenses during the BPTC year will be available.

THIRD SIX PUPILLAGES
We welcome applications for third six pupillages from applicants who have completed a pupillage at a leading Commercial or Chancery set. Applications for 2017 should be sent to the Pupillage Administrator with a CV, covering letter and two references clearly marked "Application for 3rd Six Pupillage" by 20 July 2018.
Each year we offer up to ten funded mini-pupillages for the duration of one week with an award of £500.
As a funded mini-pupil, you will be placed with senior members of Chambers who are qualified to act as pupil supervisors. During the week you will be given a written problem to solve which will be reviewed if you apply for a full pupillage.
Please send a CV and covering letter by post or e-mail to the Pupillage Administrator. If you are a non-law candidate, we would expect you to have started the GDL before applying for a mini-pupillage with us.
Applications for our next funded mini-pupillages, between February and November 2018, must be received by 19 January 2018 and 25 May 2018.
Our unfunded mini-pupillages, typically two days long, offer an invaluable insight to the workings of a barristers' chambers.
We offer them between January and March, April and July, and October and December each year.
A mini-pupillage is not a requirement for prospective pupils at South Square, but if you are considering a career at the Bar we recommend taking several of them in different sets and covering diverse areas of the law.
Please send a CV and covering letter by post or e-mail to the Pupillage Administrator. If you are a non-Law candidate, we would expect you to have started the GDL before applying for a mini-pupillage with us.
Applications for our unfunded mini-pupillages, between January and December 2018, must be received by 17 November 2017, 20 April 2018 and 6 July 2018.
