RICHARD KEEN QC was called to the Scottish Bar ( The Faculty of Advocates ) in 1980.

As a junior counsel his area of practice covered company and commercial advisory work; commercial litigation and insurance / re insurance work.

In the period from 1986 to 1993 he held the appointment of standing junior counsel to the Department of Trade and Industry in Scotland.

In 1989 he was instructed to represent the interests of contractors insurers and re insurers at the Cullen Inquiry into the Piper Alpha disaster. Thereafter he was engaged in the litigations which ultimately resolved the insurance and re insurance claims arising out of the disaster.


Richard Keen was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1993. Since then his principal area of practice has been in commercial litigation, extending to banking, insurance, engineering construction and offshore energy. His advisory work has included a number of major financial restructurings including, more recently, British Energy. He also advised on the introduction of SLP’s at the Society of Lloyds.


From 1999 to 2003 he was Chairman of the Appeal Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.

In 2000 Richard Keen led the defence of the second accused ( Lamin Fhimah ) at the trial in Camp Zeist, Holland, relating to the Pan Am / Lockerbie bombing which concluded with the acquittal of Fhimah.


Richard Keen QC is listed by the Legal 500 as preeminent or leading counsel in the areas of commercial litigation, construction litigation and media law.

In 2006 Richard Keen was elected Treasurer of The Faculty of Advocates.
